Herman Hesse, and The Glass Bead Game

Herman Hesse wrote Der Glasperlenspiel in 1943 and received the Nobel Peace Prize for this work. In it he writes of a Utopian group in the future whose sole purpose is to practice the “Glass Bead Game”. It has become a method of notation, much like reading music but where very diverse concepts may be taught, comprehended and compared, contrasted and linked to other disciplines and in almost all cases delivering the potential to examine various ideas with a new more inutitive language, much like mathematics is supposed to be the language of science and technology. Now one of the reasons we are having the difficulties we are facing is that we are using this method of mathematics and it is inadequate to express many of the new concepts which arise at the macro and micro limitations of our Universe.
